Humanity as a global intelligent community is represented by the image of Earth. The faintly conical beam between Earth and the object represents our nascent desire to find intelligent life elsewhere in the cosmos. The object, depicted is the Sombrero Galaxy (NGC4594 or M104). Being a collection of an enormous number of stars, other celestial matter, and suspected solar systems and at a distance of 60 million light years, the image depicts the magnitude and complexity of the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
